Hard to believe Owen is already 8 months old. He is growing so much and turning into a little boy more and more each day. I am really enjoying this stage. He is really getting a personality and is constantly smiling, laughing, babbling. We just got back from 10 days in Florida visiting Grammy and Grampy Russell who rented a place down there for the winter. Owen had to get his very own passport for the trip and the passport picture we got taken is so adorable! We had a wonderful trip. The weather was beautiful the whole trip- in the high 20’s almost every day. Owen got to experience the beach and the ocean for the first time. We spent most of our mornings on Seista Key Beach in Sarasota. It is the most beautiful beach with white sand that is like flour, and turquoise blue water that is always warm and has the most beautiful soft bottom. Owen was a little nervous putting his feet in the water at first and cried a bit as he is used to very warm water temperatures in the pool where we take swimming lessons in Oakville. But after splashing in the ocean for a few minutes he got used to it and had fun. He also had fun playing in the sand. He didn’t know what to think of it at first but soon realized how fun it was. He was pretty good about not trying to put the sand in his mouth and managed to avoid trying to do that until his 4th day at the beach and when I turned around for one minute he had grabbed a big handful of sand and put it in his mouth. The look on his face was so funny.
While we were in Florida Owen reached a few milestones. He decided he no longer wanted to use his soother and started spitting it out as soon as we gave it to him. He had been showing less interest in it over the past few weeks (around 7.5 months) but officially decided now that he wants nothing to do with a soother! What a big boy! On March 5 at 8 months and 3 days old he also started talking. We took him shopping and while we were out in the mall he started saying “Ba, ba, ba, ba” and just kept saying it. Nick sometimes refers to the bottle as ba ba, so we thought maybe he was referring to that, but likely it has no meaning. He loves saying it now and says it over and over many times a day for the past week or so. It’s so incredibly cute! While we were in Florida, sitting in my parents living room Owen also started crawling! He hasen’t shown alot of interest in crawling as he is not much of a belly time baby. He likes to stand or sit upright. He is very happy in a highchair at restaurant or in the front of the shopping cart, but doesn’t like to be placed on his back or recline in his stroller. As Owen is quite solid, especially around his midsection, he finds it hard to get the movements right for crawling and gets frustrated easily and cries, so never really gives himself the opportunity to learn to crawl. Anyways, last week he was laying on the floor in my parents place we witnessed him crawl! I think the combination of the carpet on the floor there and the fact that he was wearing shorts above the knee, that he had a good grip and amount of resistance to do so. Since that day we have seen him crawl a little bit more, but is still very sporadic. But I know that its just about time to start putting up the baby gates as he will be on the move very soon! Owen is getting very good with his balance and can walk along furniture and stand up with one hand holding something and then bend over to pick something up with the other hand. He does this with no problems. He just loves to be on his feet and is very happy this way. He still has yet to pull himself up from sitting to standing, but I can tell that will happen very soon.
Owen also had a few milestones with his eating. While in Florida he tried cheese and yogurt for the first time and loved both. Owen has been a good eater and seems to enjoy all the vegetables and meat we give him, but you can tell he has a sweet tooth as his mouth opens up big and wide when we feed him cereal and fruit and yogurt. He definitely has a preference for that! He has alot of fun eating his baby mum mum’s and little graduate puffs- he picks them up off the table and feeds them to himself and has fun while doing it! This can keep him entertained while Mommy and Daddy eat our dinner, so it works out great. He is also getting very good with his sippy cup and picks it up by himself and gives himself a drink whenever he is thirsty! He loves his water. We took him to a few restaurants while we were in Florida and he had a great time sitting in the baby high chairs. All the people at the restaurant admired him and complimented him on what a good boy he was. We also went to a Chili dinner with Grammy and Grampy at the seniors park that they are staying in and Owen was so well behaved. He sat there in his high chair smiling and babbling at everyone that talked to him. He was also very well behaved on the plane. He is a good little flyer. Overall his first trip to Florida was a success and we look for to many more trips to Florida over the years.
